A mum has been told to reconsider the name she’s chosen for her son, as people say it will be setting him up for a lifetime of bullying because it sounds like an ‘old man’
Choosing a name for your baby is a deeply personal choice.
Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to names. Some parents might be drawn to unique baby names that ensure their child stands out, while others may prefer popular and classic names for their little ones. There’s no right or wrong choice, and with the vast array of options available, it’s impossible to satisfy everyone’s taste.
However, one mum has been advised to think twice about the name she intends to give her son, with warnings that it could lead to a lifetime of bullying if she goes ahead with her chosen name.
In a Reddit post, the mum expressed her desire to give her second son a “retro” name, but her choice has raised eyebrows.
The mum shared: “[My husband and I] both like the name Barry. Am I crazy that this is unique, retro-cool, and has great nickname potential? Or is it too outdated?
“I have always had a crush on Barry Bostwick in the Rocky Horror Picture Show, so I think that’s why I think it’s hip. It’s a recognisable name but uncommon today.”
She admitted to having doubts about the name Barry, especially after her best friend confessed she wasn’t keen on it but would “pretend to love it” if that was the final decision.
The mum also mentioned considering the name Leo but rejected it due to its popularity. She and her husband have also considered other names, such as Elliot, Adrien, and Erik, but none have made the final cut.
However, commenters on the post swiftly advised the mum against naming her son Barry. Despite a minor resurgence in popularity thanks to actor Barry Keoghan, many people associate the name Barry with a “balding old man”.
One commenter stated: “Barry brings a balding, overweight guy in an ill-fitting suit to mind. I’m not American, though, so maybe different connotations in my country.”
Another remarked: “I don’t care for it and see it squarely in the Larry/Gary/Terry category of Stale Middle-Aged Guy Names. That said, it’s not objectively bad, just not to my personal taste.”
A third commenter shared: “Not retro-cool. Just old and never was good.”
On the other hand, several commenters encouraged the mum to follow her heart, expressing their love for the name Barry and advising her to disregard others’ opinions.
Someone stated: “I don’t get all the hate. I think it’s very sweet! When we give kids these names they take on new connotations so fast, I really don’t think it’s an issue.”
