In the early hours of April 11, a significant incident unfolded at the Sinansan Line Section 5-2 construction site in Iljik-dong, Gwangmyeong City, Gyeonggi Province. At approximately 12:30 AM, a report was received indicating cracks in several pillars of an underground tunnel being constructed using the “2arch” structure. This prompted immediate traffic control measures on surrounding roads, affecting a 2 km stretch from Oriro to Yangji Intersection to Hoyun Intersection under two-way control.
Later that day, at around 3:15 PM, part of the underground tunnel collapsed near Yangji Intersection. Four workers at the site lost contact with rescue teams; fortunately, three have been confirmed alive while one remains presumed isolated. The collapse has raised urgent concerns about safety protocols and construction practices at the site managed by POSCO Engineering & Construction (E&C), a major South Korean construction company known for its involvement in large infrastructure projects.
The Sinansan Line is a vital metropolitan railway project spanning 44.7 km aimed at enhancing connectivity across key regions such as Ansan, Gwangmyeong, and Yeouido. Its significance underscores the potential impact of construction delays or accidents on local communities and commuters. This latest incident follows a fatal accident at the same site in early October last year when inadequate control of the work radius led to a worker’s death after colliding with reinforcing bars.
In response to last year’s tragedy, POSCO E&C announced plans to strengthen investment in safety facilities and education. However, this recent collapse has reignited scrutiny over their safety measures and accountability. The company’s previous safety record and reputation are now under intense examination as authorities investigate the cause of this latest accident.
Construction safety remains a pressing issue in South Korea, where numerous incidents have highlighted the need for improved standards and regulations. The use of specific engineering designs like the “2arch” structure requires meticulous oversight to prevent vulnerabilities that could lead to catastrophic failures.
Local authorities, including those from Gwangmyeong Police Station, are actively managing the situation and coordinating rescue efforts while assessing procedural and legal aspects related to construction site safety. Meanwhile, public and media attention is focused on corporate practices and government oversight following such accidents.
As investigations continue into both the structural integrity of the tunnel and adherence to safety protocols by POSCO E&C, there is an urgent call for transparency and accountability from all parties involved.
