Bridgerton and Sinners star Adjoa Andoh came out proudly in support of trans people during a London trans rights protest over the weekend.
The 62-year-old star, known for her work in Invictus and Fractured, joined thousands of protestors in the centre of London over the weekend to publicly condemn a recent Supreme Court decision which excludes trans women from the legal definition of women.
The Wednesday (16 April) ruling argue that the term sex, as defined in the 2010 Equality Act, relates to so-called “biological sex,” essentially legally excluding trans people from their preferred gender identity.
An estimated 20,000 people gathered in London on Saturday (19 April) to publicly condemn the ruling during an “emergency demonstration” organised by Trans Liberation to push back against “further attacks” on the community.
Posting to Instagram during the height of the protest, Andoh pictured herself smiling in the crowd of trans, non-binary people and allies holding trans flags and signs of solidarity.
“Trans Rights are Human Rights,” she wrote. “Happy Easter! All God’s children welcome – in the sunshine at Parliament Square yesterday.”
The post quickly went viral, with users thanking and commending Andoh’s unwavering positivity at a time when trans rights are being threatened.
“When you learn you’re a fan of the right people: Best feeling ever! Thank you for speaking up and supporting!” One user said.
While Andoh’s allyship is certainly great to see, it should come as no surprise to longtime fans, especially after her inclusion in a Boots Christmas ad in which she happily uses they/them pronouns to refer to someone.
Her unwavering support for the trans community comes after fellow Bridgerton star, Nicola Coughlan, raised over £60,000 for trans charity Not A Phase in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling.
Coughlan launched the fundraising campaign after the charity said it was struggling financially, initially picking a £10,000 fundraising goal. The community smashed that target, instead raising a huge £63,000.
In a video, Coughlan said she was “horrified” by the ruling, condemning further attacks in law and beyond, which she described as “stomach-churning and disgusting.”
“To see people celebrating [the Supreme Court ruling] is more stomach-churning and disgusting,” she added. “I want to start a fundraiser for Not A Phase, who are an incredible trans charity in the UK.”
