MANILA, Philippines—La Salle could hardly celebrate after beating first-round tormentor University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at Araneta Coliseum.
Angel Canino, who turned in a tremendous outing to help the Lady Spikers stave off the Golden Tigresses, was immediately rushed to a standby ambulance at the Big Dome tunnel after the game.
“Naapektuhan din siya no’ng tinamaan siya ni Shevana (Laput) sa batok so nahilo siya,” said La Salle assistant coach Noel Orcullo with reporters after their 15-25, 25-17, 14-26, 25-20, 16-14 win over UST.
(She got dizzy because of that accidental hit from Shevana in the nape.)

“Before pa, during the game, sinasabi na sa amin na di maganda ‘yong [pakiramdam] ni Angel kaya kinuha kaagad siya ng mga PT namin. Hopefully, maging maayos at hindi maging malala ‘yong tama sa kaniya.”
(Before, during the game, they were already telling us that Angel wasn’t feeling too good so our PTs immediately took her. Hopefully, everything goes well for her.)
Canino collided with Laput in the fourth set leaving the Season 85 MVP lying on the floor for a short period of time. She got up but was clearly not feeling 100 percent throughout the remainder of the game. She finished the match with a game-high 27 points and 13 excellent receptions and 13 excellent digs.

Canino crumbled to the floor right after the game’s final point and was helped off the court.
“I had hit the ball and she was the one behind me to cover for me but she fell and stayed on the floor while I was still landing so of course, my landing was a bit off. I couldn’t balance myself with my knee,” said Laput, who finished with 16 points to help La Salle improve to a 6-3 card.
“Angel is such a strong person. She’s very strong mentally and we need that as a team captain. Honestly, she didn’t blame me at all or anything. She just said, ‘laban, puso,’” she added.
