On Monday night, Lisa was one of the A-list guests at this year’s star-studded fundraiser, which had the dress code “tailored for you” in a nod to the Metropolitan Museum Of Art’s new exhibit Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.
The award-winning singer and rapper walked the red carpet in a lace jacket and matching bodysuit, but quickly faced criticism when fans spotted the face of what appeared to be civil rights activist Rosa Parks stitched into the outfit’s pattern, including over the crotch area.
Lisa’s outfit was a collaboration between Louis Vuitton creative Pharrell Williams (who was also one of the event’s co-chairs) and the artist Henry Taylor, the latter of whom has insisted his design did not depict Rosa Parks.
Instead, a representative told Vulture that the portraits depicted in Lisa’s outfit were of figures from his own life.
A spokesperson told the outlet: “The figure featured in Lisa’s Louis Vuitton look is not Rosa Parks, but one of Henry’s neighbours.
“The faces seen on this look, as well as on previous LV garments featuring Taylor’s artwork, are all drawn from his personal life – family members, friends, and neighbours. These figures come directly from Henry’s existing artworks.”
“None of the individuals depicted in any of the garments are Rosa Parks or other well-known figures from Black cultural history,” they added. “They are all people from Henry’s own life.”
The controversy surrounding Lisa came after she and her Blackpink bandmates faced backlash over a resurfaced video that appears to show them using a racial slur, according to Indian outlet the Economic Times.
Lisa has not yet commented on the video, nor have the rest of Blackpink.
