A retired police officer in Odisha’s Berhampur died of severe burn injuries after being allegedly set on fire by his female tenant, following a fallout in their extramarital relationship.
The victim, Harihar Sahu, a retired Reserve Inspector (RI), had reportedly developed a personal relationship with Sudeshna Jena, who had been living as a tenant in his home. According to police, tensions had been building between the two in recent weeks, culminating in a shocking act of violence inside the house.
On the day of the incident, Sudeshna allegedly poured kerosene on Sahu and set him ablaze. Neighbours and family members were reportedly unaware of the strained relationship between them.
Sahu was initially rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur and later referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack due to the severity of his injuries. He succumbed to his burns while undergoing treatment.
Following the incident, Sahu’s daughter filed a police complaint. During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to the crime and admitted that the act was pre-planned.
“A woman tenant confessed to the pre-planned murder by pouring kerosene and setting the victim on fire,” said Shravan Vivek M, Superintendent of Police, Berhampur.
Police have registered a case of murder and an investigation is presently underway.
