York CAMRA has presented the Bootham Tavern with a plaque in recognition of members voting it York CAMRA’s Spring City Pub of the Season.
Branch chairman Chris Tregellis told the Press: “Some of York’s best pubs are to be found just outside the city walls and the cluster of pubs in Bootham is an excellent example. The Bootham Tavern is the centrepiece of this grouping and is a worthy winner of York CAMRA’s Spring City Pub of the season.
“It’s a busy pub with regular football to watch, live music at weekends and scheduled poker nights, but the beer is the star. What a selection! It regularly offers Farmers Blonde, White Rat, Titanic Plum Porter and Black Sheep so there is something for every taste.”

“Landlady, Nicky Hunter, was delighted to receive the recognition which is well deserved.”
Chris added: “Anyone walking into town from Clifton is sure to feel the gravitational pull of this exceptional pub and feel bound to give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.”
Nicky told the Press that everyone enjoyed the presentation, which included a buffet.
She said: “For an old sports and music venue to win Pub of the Season is really pleasing.
“It comes down to good cellar management, keeping the beers clean, having a good customer base, and having good staff.
“We listen to the customers. Some said they had never heard of White Rat Plum Porter but they like it now. If you listen to your customers, you won’t go far wrong.”
Nicky is in her eighth year as landlady, which follows from her running the Molly’s Tea Rooms in Stonegate. When Nicky arrived in 2016 it underwent a £500,000 makeover.
She hopes and expects the CAMRA recognition will boost trade at the pub, which also stages poker nights and has six letting rooms.
The Bootham Tavern also receives much praise on social media, with Google awarding it 4.4 stars based on 774 reviews.
Nicky added: “I hope for more fresh ideas for different ales and keeping the customers happy.”
