Dog owners issued warning over major behaviour change in April and May | UK | News

Dog owners have been warned that springtime could trigger changes in their pet’s behaviour, including an increase in bolting, chasing and barking. The changing seasons can bring an abundance of fresh scents, from blossoming flowers to freshly cut grass.

Jimmy Bratley, a veterinary advisor at ADAPTIL, explained that this can lead to sensory overload for our canine companions. He said: “Springtime brings lots of new smells that your pooch will want to explore, so be prepared to allow them to do this, but always keep an eye open for nesting birds, livestock that may be grazing, joggers, horse riders or any noise or sound that they won’t have heard for a while.

“Consider keeping them on a lead while allowing them to explore safely – and always reward them for good behaviour.”

Other behavioural changes that may occur include dogs trying to escape from gardens to follow an intriguing scent, or ignoring their owner’s cues.

People have also been urged to consider their pets when choosing plants for their garden, as common flowers can prove harmful to dogs.

Annie-Mae Levy, a dog trainer and behaviourist at Woofz by nove8, warned owners that ingesting daffodil bulbs or petals can cause vomiting, while toxic compounds in tulips can irritate a dog’s mouth or stomach.

Our four-legged friends may also be feeling the effects of hay fever as pollen levels rise.

Dogs tend to experience slightly different symptoms to humans, with skin irritation the most common sign that their body is reacting to pollen. This may lead to excessive licking, biting or rubbing of their face, paws, ears or other areas.

One expert even recommended keeping dogs indoors during the day and limiting walks to early in the morning and during the evening when pollen count is lower.

Symptoms can be relieved with medicated shampoos, topical treatments and antihistamines.
