Super Rugby Pacific 2025 | NSW Waratahs, Teddy Wilson try video, Sean Maloney column

Normally I kick this weekly column off with a little preamble, a tease of what’s to come, some foreshadowing if you will.

It ain’t happening this Masters Monday.

We’re rolling straight in and we’re starting with what took place at the Sydney Football Stadium.

THE TRY THAT SHOOK THE SFS

Waratahs scrumhalf Teddy Wilson’s stunning try against the Chiefs is now rightly in the conversation for the best ever scored at the SFS.

All Blacks legend Christian Cullen zig-zagged his way for a Hurricanes screamer in 1996, but this was something else.

I was no student of Pythagoras – spelling theorem was even a challenge for me.

But if we crunch the angles and markings on the field, the ball looks to have travelled well over 140m.

Across that space it was handled SEVEN times between FIVE players.

This all unfolded after the Waratahs had defended their own tryline for SEVEN straight phases with the ladder leading Chiefs hammering away.

It was extraordinary.

Helping to capture the moment was the little commentary box cam which ‘Director Hamish’ only breaks out for select games.

He chose well on Friday.

Take a look and you’ll notice former NSW captain Matt Burke going bananas and raising both hands to praise Waratahs Jesus.

Morgan Turinui, a lover of good rugby and in a state of disbelief, shows extreme broadcasting restraint to let the crowd effects tell the story, before wrapping the mind blowing coast-to-coast special.

I’m told by those throughout the crowd that the noise was deafening, everyone lost their marbles.

My teenage daughter Yas was in and amongst it and said: “Dad, I’ll never forget it.”

Wilson’s SFS stunner is now rightly also the most watched clip this year on the Super Rugby social media platforms.

The 2025 Super season really is the gift that keeps on giving.

WARATAHS WOMEN WIN AGAIN

They’ve been the Australian benchmark in women’s XVs since the inception of the Super W and now the NSW women are champions once more.

Up against an in form and loaded Reds outfit, Piper Duck and her team were under immense pressure before kicking away late at North Sydney Oval to claim the title.

As expected, centre Georgina Friedrichs was at her hard hitting and running best, Desiree Miller lit up the field with every touch and youngster Caitlyn Halse wowed in the second half.

You might remember Halse made her Tahs debut as a 16-year-old before going on to play with the Wallaroos.

Next stop for the women is North Harbour Stadium in Auckland where they will face the New Zealand champion Blues on Thursday.

You’ll be able to catch all the action on Stan.

BIG GAME BOBBY V

It looked as though the Brumbies had taken serious offence to the attention being afforded the Reds in recent weeks with a thumping win over their rivals from the north.

Down 14 early, the Brumbies bashed their way back into the fight to make it 21 straight points thanks in big part to Rob Valetini going absolutely berserk.

The reigning John Eales Medallist made two notable steam rolling runs, one of which saw him score a try over a brave but outsized Tim Ryan and the other through Test forwards Seru Uru and Zane Nonggorr.

The latter was like watching a Mack truck plow through two hatchbacks.

His return to the side of the scrum saw Tom Hooper shift to the second row where he was a standout yet again.

We joked on Between Two Posts this week that’d be great to see his contract with Exeter in the UK either misplaced or burnt.

Nobody wants to see him leave, such is his form and presence this year.

Unfortunately the night didn’t end well for powerhouse prop Blake Schoupp who Morgs and I bumped into back at the team hotel.

He was his usual upbeat self despite suffering a season ending Achilles rupture and was staying on in Brisbane for surgery.

SUAALII AND LEVI LEAD THE COVERAGE

Sevens star Maddi Levi’s profile in the game continues to rise and rise with Stan and Rugby Australia selecting the World player of the year to be the face of last week’s broadcast deal announcement.

Standing alongside Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, Levi effortlessly handled her media commitments while fronting the five year extension.

The 22-year-old’s appearance came off the back of a Singapore tournament which saw her become the quickest women to score 200 tries on the series.

A huge highlight of the new deal is the recommitment to Hospital Cup and Shute Shield coverage.

Enabling fans to stay connected to their local communities along with match replays and highlights is just enormous.

Staying with the Shute Shield, congratulations to the Western Sydney Two Blues who landed a rare win against my beloved Manly Marlins on the weekend.

See you tonight for Between Two Posts with Matt Burke and Morgan Turinui.
