In a surprising shake-up on the charts, Drake’s new single ‘Nokia‘ has newly claimed the top position, edging out fellow rapper and rival Kendrick Lamar. The heated rivalry has only intensified following this news and other similar developments. Not only does the single’s success signal a small victory in his beef with Lamar, but it also shows that Drake has been able to weather the firestorm of negative press he’s received of late. As fans on social media buzz about Drake’s new music, many critics wonder what Kendrick Lamar will do in response to Drake’s latest success.
Drake’s Single ‘Nokia’ Tops Major Global Chart
It’s no secret that Drake and Kendrick Lamar have been engaged in a personal and artistic feud for some time. While the two have slung jabs at each other throughout their careers for years, the battle intensified when Lamar released his 2024 hit single “Not Like Us.” The song earned him five Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year, topped music charts worldwide, and spawned a half-time performance at this year’s Super Bowl.
However, “Not Like Us”, according to Drake’s legal team, was not merely a diss track, but contained damning lyrics that defamed his character and jeopardized his safety. The track propelled the “Passionfruit” singer to sue Universal Music Group for defamation and harassment for distributing and promoting Kendrick Lamar’s track.
Recently, Drake won a small legal victory in his case against UMG in which the judge ordered the company to release classified documents such as the salaries of senior executives and Kendrick Lamar’s record contract. While the outcome of the legal case has yet to be determined, for several months, Drake has kept busy with his latest single, “Nokia.” The single was released on February 14, the same day his joint album “$ome $e*y $ongs 4 U” with PARTYNEXTDOOR was released.
Station Free Radio described the song as “a high-energy track that blends modern club beats with a nostalgic 80s R&B vibe. From the first listen, it’s clear that “Nokia” is designed to keep the energy high, making it a perfect fit for any party or late-night club setting.” But if fans were hoping to hear a diss towards Kendrick Lamar, they were sorely disappointed as one of the song’s lyrics states “F*** a rap beef, I’m tryna get the party lit.”
While Kendrick Lamar’s song featuring SZA ‘Luther‘ currently dominates the Billboard 100, ‘Nokia’ is quickly climbing the ranks at #3. In another milestone, Forbes announced that Nokia had claimed the number-one position on Apple’s Music Global Chart, a massive feat for the rapper and singer.
