Oh boy, it’s that time again. Time for a Big Pop Culture Thing — James Gunn’s Superman is the new target — to get put through the ideological talking head wringer. Time once again for people with clear agendas and/or the media literacy of aphids to spout opinions and thoughts as if they actually know what they are talking about (spoiler: they don’t and they know it).
The big bad BS talking point for Superman looks to be about Kal-El being an immigrant, spurred on by James Gunn laying out the obviousness of this facet to Superman’s character. Naturally, mega dotards have glommed onto this in order to spew their hatred towards the movie and its perceived themes.
So if you feel that way, I’m here to tell you very plainly, look at this article’s headline. That’s you. You’re a moron.
Superman Isn’t From Earth! Shocker!
In case you are culturally deficient, let me remind you that Superman is not a native American. In fact, he isn’t even from Earth! That makes him an alien to all nations on our planet, but the fact that he arrives in America and is raised there ties the country to his identity as a pop culture figure.
The idea of Superman, created by two Jewish men who were the sons of immigrants, is that a good-hearted person can embody the positive ideals of America even if they weren’t born there. It’s not hard to suss out that theme if you passed third grade reading comprehension or aren’t a deliberately ignorant monster.
Superman Is About The Heart Of America
Unless you have direct and potent lineage to the indigenous peoples that were on this land before it was stolen by European settlers, your history is one of immigration. Your family came to America from Somewhere Else. They may as well have plopped your ancestors in a rocket pod and shot them into a Kansas wheat field.
That’s part of the beauty of Superman as an idea and as a reflection of America’s potential. Here is a being who has come to our country and has all the tools possible to dominate us. Instead, Clark Kent is raised with the kind of ideals that should be at the heart of America: empathy, kindness, a desire to help everyone instead of a select few.
Anyone rallying against these ideas is a Lex Luthor: selfish, bitter, and ultimately inhuman. That’s all I see when a bunch of tactically deployed buffoons bash Superman for daring to focus on this element of the iconic character.
Don’t Listen To Idiots
All this is to reaffirm the very simple and direct headline for this article. Anyone espousing these kinds of takes is a certified idiot, either by choice or by legitimate stupidity. Anybody with even the most basic understanding of storytelling can understand the intrinsic importance of these themes to Superman.
If you do recognize them and disagree with them, then you are just hateful and Superman as a character is never going to be for you. Instead, go fawn over Homelander like other nitwits.
