We don’t know whether you agree, but roguelikes have lost their lustre a bit, haven’t they?
There’s still good ones, of course – great ones, in fact – but they aren’t quite as exciting as when Rogue Legacy completely consumed our PS Vitas.
Full Metal Schoolgirl is attempting to bring a bit more personality to the genre, with a zany 90s anime theme that’s got us off our seat.
This second trailer doesn’t tell us a whole lot new about the game – you’ll be playing as one of two cyborg schoolgirls, as you take on an automated workforce in a dystopian corporate future – but it does do a good job of selling the release’s sense of humour.
Here’s the story setup, for those curious:
“The enemy is the world’s largest corporation, Meternal Jobz. The cyborg corporate slaves known as the Working Dead who relentlessly fight as corporate warriors even to their death, block your path. They will attack you in droves, relying on their numbers. Show no mercy – scrap them all!”
This being a roguelike, you’ll unlock gear as you progress to upgrade your character, while your in-game “livestreams” will earn you cash, which can then be invested into various other upgrades. We like the framing of this!
Our only question is whether the gameplay will match the vibes.
This is being made by D3Publisher and Yuke’s, two Japanese companies who have a penchant for scrappy low-budget efforts.
A roguelike obviously requires a rock-solid gameplay loop to carry its concept, so here’s hoping this title passes that test.
The game’s due out on 23rd October so we don’t have to wait long to find out, and if you pre-order you’ll unlock some tasty trinkets as a reward, so it’s worth reading about all those bonuses through here.
