Gay actor Matt Bomer speaks out about being outed by the media

Matt Bomer has opened up about the painful reality of having his sexuality disclosed publicly before he was ready by several online media platforms, including American celeb gossip blogger Perez Hilton’s.

Speaking on Dinner’s On Me, a podcast hosted by Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Bomer recalled being outed in the early 2000s.

While Bomer wasn’t hiding who he was in his personal life, he said he was never given the chance to share that part of himself publicly on his own terms — something he described as deeply “unfair.”

“Folks could kind of take over your own personal narrative before you even had a chance. I was already out in my life, but it was a time when it was very risky to be out professionally,” Bomer said. “The decision was taken out of my hands.”

He said that it wasn’t because he didn’t “want to” come out that it “didn’t have a career that warranted that” at the time.

“It felt kind of unfair to me that that was stolen by people who did have a microphone at the time,” Bomer explained.

Matt Bomer came out as gay publicly in 2012 during the Chase Humanitarian Awards, thanking his partner, Simon Halls, during his speech.

Bomer expressed gratitude to his “loving family” who were a “safety net” for him when he was outed, and would have been there for him if his career had been affected due to his sexuality.

Bomer, now a father of three kids and a longtime advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, also spoke about enduring homophobia in his career and the emotional toll of having to hide parts of himself to feel safe in the industry.

He also spoke about one professional experience early in his career where he did not feel safe being out on set, stating that he doesn’t “regret” not saying anything.

“There was language being thrown around on the set and direction being given where those terms were being said and I had no one else around me,” he added.

Matt Bomer is currently starring in Mid-Century Modern. The Hulu sitcom features queer legends Nathan Lane and Nathan Lee Graham alongside Bomer, and follows three friends who are all “gay gentlemen of a certain age” who decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs.

Mid-Century Modern is available to stream now on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ in the UK and Australia.
