Ghost in the Shell director Mamoru Oshii says political correctness has made western games ‘terrible’

Ghost in the Shell

In a recent interview, legendary anime film director Mamoru Oshii called out “political correctness” saying that he has a “strong aversion” to it in his work.

Oshii is famous for his work throughout the 80s, 90s, and aughts, including directing titles such as Patlabor: The MovieGhost in the Shell, and being the writer for Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade.

In an interview with Pia News, Oshii took the time to mention “Political Correctness” and the role it has in media as a potential tool of censorship and insincerity.

The full interview is only available on the app version of Pia News, but you can read some snippets below.

Oshii: Political correctness started from the idea of giving legitimacy to the socially weak. There is nothing wrong with that. In a mature society, it is a natural responsibility. However, the problem is that it has taken that as its starting point and made the socially weak into the strong.

Oshii: They were given priority in getting into school, and priority in finding a job. What’s more, the companies that advised them charged them ridiculous amounts in consulting fees. Game companies ask for hundreds of millions of yen from them.

Oshii: Basically, it’s based on admiration! If you deny admiration, entertainment loses its reason for existence as entertainment. In the past, even if you said “beautiful” people would say it was discriminatory. Western games are really terrible, political correctness

In recent years, fans have increasingly been skeptical of politically-motivated “censorship” and corporate meddling, considering them at the very least to be insincere if not outright detrimental to the creative process.
