Two appear in court over alleged Darlington alleyway robbery

Police were called to Darlington just before 1am on Sunday (March 30) after a woman reported being attacked in an alleyway between Columbia Street and Craig Street when her handbag was stolen.

An investigation was launched and Durham Constabulary arrested two people earlier this week.

Crime scene investigators at the sceneCrime scene investigators at the scene (Image: NORTHERN ECHO) The force has now confirmed Rebecca Raper, 42, of Brighton Road, Darlington, and Dean Nicholson, 30, of Flamingo Close, Darlington, have been charged with robbery.

The pair appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court yesterday (April 3) where neither entered pleas to the charge.

Nicholson was remanded in custody ahead of a hearing at Teesside Crown Court on Thursday, May 8, while Ms Raper was released on bail to appear at court on the same day. 

The Northern Echo previously reported crime scene investigators were called to the scene and were pictured placing evidence markers in the alleyway and removing items from the scene in plastic bags.

The alley – which is normally accessible to the public – was blocked off from its junction with Hollyhurst Road to a side entrance at Craig Street for several hours.
