Liam Payne girlfriend Kate Cassidy recalls last conversation with late star

Liam Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy has revealed her final conversation with the former One Direction star who died following a fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, last October.

Cassidy, 25, a model and social media influencer who dated Payne for two years before his death, also divulged her boyfriend’s chilling final words to her moments before she left him in Argentina to fly back to their home in the US.

Cassidy was appearing on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast overnight when she recalled their final conversation.

Cassidy said she was about to leave for the airport when they shared their final words.

“I remember sitting there with him and I was going on and on and on about how much I love him,” she said.

“And he laughed and interrupted me and was like, ‘Kate you’re gonna miss your flight, your car is in the driveway’.”

She said Payne then made a chilling prediction. “[He said] you’re acting like this is the last time you are ever gonna see me again,” she recalled.

“But to look back in time and know that that was the last time I was ever gonna see him again is just so chilling.”

Cassidy said she felt “so blessed” that she got to have “that heartfelt goodbye”.

“Our last goodbye – I wouldn’t have wanted it to be any differently. I am so glad we had that beautiful time together and I wouldn’t change that,” she said.

Payne died from injuries sustained when he fell from the third-floor balcony of the hotel where he was staying on October 16, 2024. He was 31.

His death prompted a wave of grief felt right across the world.

A toxicology report revealed Payne had alcohol, cocaine and a prescription antidepressants in his system when he fell from the balcony.

Five people were later arrested and charged with various offences, mostly related to the supply of drugs to the singer. Charges against all but two were later dropped by authorities in Argentina.

This is not the first time Cassidy has spoken about the late star.

Just last week, she shared a heartfelt tribute to the singer on TikTok.

“I just felt the need to come on here and speak,” she said from one of her bases in the US.

“I am watching the sunset right now and I know that Liam’s here with me, but I still can’t fully wrap my head around the fact that he’s not physically here with me,” she continued, before adding it was starting to sink in that Liam was never coming back.

“One thing I’ve caught myself saying so often while being here and even before being here… [is] ‘Liam would love this’, instead of ‘Liam would have loved this’.

“Saying those words out loud in the present tense, but realising that it’s something that isn’t present and he’s not gonna be able to make these new memories with me or relive past memories with me… It’s something really, really hard to wrap my head around still.”

Cassidy previously said during an interview with The Sun that she “would never have left Argentina” if she had an inkling something like this could have happened.

Cassidy first discussed Payne’s death in an interview with The Sun in February in which she said she decided to return to Florida to take care of the couple’s rescue dog, Nala.

“I had a responsibility, we had a responsibility. We had our dog and obviously I never, ever thought this event would occur,” she told the publication.

“Love is so optimistic, and you just hope that everything will work out at the end. Obviously if I knew, if I could see into the future, I would never have left Argentina.”

‘Come back in two years’: Five words made Liam Payne a star

Cassidy told The Sun she was grateful one of Payne’s friends called her to break the news of his death so she didn’t find out about it on social media.

She said she was at home, “scrolling TikTok” when one of Liam’s friends called her.

“That moment, it’s like blank; it’s blacked out in my head.”

She said she first thought it was a rumour before getting “a bad feeling in my gut”. She then tried to call Payne but he did not answer.

“I just never thought this would have happened, that it would turn out the way it did,” she said.

“It still doesn’t feel fully real for me that he’s not here.”
