Jason Momoa Visits Aussie Koala Hospital

Jason Momoa recently stopped by the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital on Australia’s Gold Coast to learn about the important work they’re doing rescuing and rehabilitating koalas.

The Hollywood star flew over as part of a collaboration with environmental charity WildArk and premium ice-cream brand Nuii. In a video posted on YouTube, we get to see him cuddling koalas, listening to one animal’s chest with a stethoscope and helping hospital staff return some to the wild.

“Did you know koalas are now endangered?” he says in the video.

In 2008, Currumbin Wildlife Hospital was looking after 27 koalas, now over 400 are being admitted every year.

The animals are endangered because they’re impacted by habitat destruction, bushfires, vehicle strikes and dog attacks but according to the hospital, their leading cause of death is chlamydia. The disease can make koalas both infertile and blind, affecting their population. The hospital is however running a vaccine program to help save koalas across Australia.

Jason has also teamed up with Wild Ark to raise funds to help the hospital purchase ICU equipment.

Later in the video, Jason can be seen patting a baby koala – and yes, he’s smitten: “Oh man, they’re so cute!”

And it’s not only land animals Jason cares about – in 2022, he was named an Advocate for Life Below Water by the United Nation’s Environment Program (UNEP) – which makes total sense given he’s Aquaman and all!

“With this designation, I hope to continue my own journey to protect and conserve the ocean and all living things on our beautiful blue planet, for our generation and the generations to come,” Jason said at the time. “For me, the ocean is an ancient teacher, a guide and a muse. It is also existential. Without a healthy ocean, life on our planet as we know it would not exist.”
