Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), leading ‘Team Korea’, has been selected as the final contractor for the Czech Republic’s new nuclear power project, estimated at 26 trillion won. This marks Korean companies’ first nuclear power export in 16 years since the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2009.
According to Reuters, the Czech government held a cabinet meeting on April 30 (local time), approved the nuclear construction budget, and finalized KHNP as the nuclear project contractor. The Czech government plans to sign the main contract with KHNP on May 7.
Consequently, KHNP and the ordering entity, Elektrárna Dukovany II (EDU II), a subsidiary of ČEZ (Czech Power Company), are expected to sign the final contract in the presence of government officials from both countries.
The Czech nuclear power plant construction project secured by KHNP involves building Dukovany Units 5 and 6, each with a capacity of 1,000 MW (megawatts), in the Dukovany region of the Czech Republic. The total project cost is estimated at 400 billion koruna (26.2 trillion won).
After concluding this main contract, KHNP plans to enter into subsequent contracts with Korea Power Engineering Company, Daewoo Engineering & Construction, Doosan Enerbility, and others for design, construction, and equipment procurement, before fully embarking on the project.
KHNP President Hwang Joo-ho welcomed the confirmation of the main contract signing date for the new nuclear project, stating, “We will do our utmost until the end for the successful conclusion of the main contract for the Czech new nuclear project, its successful implementation, and timely completion.”
