Global Brain announced on the 5th that it has invested in Cala Health, a US-based developer and seller of wearable devices, through the KIRIN HEALTH INNOVATION FUND and Meiji Yasuda Future Co-creation Fund, which it jointly operates. Details such as the investment amount were not disclosed.

“Tremor” is a neurological disorder that significantly impairs patients’ quality of life by making daily activities difficult due to body shaking and affecting mental health.

The current number of patients is estimated to exceed 100 million worldwide, mainly among the elderly, with the possibility of more than 200 million people being affected in the future. In this context, current drug therapies and surgical treatments have issues with significant side effects and high invasiveness, and new treatment methods are expected to reduce patient burden and maintain/improve treatment effectiveness.

The wearable device “Cala kIQ” developed and provided by Cala Health is an FDA-approved medical device that can safely and effectively perform non-invasive treatment of the affected part of the brain causing tremors by applying electrical stimulation from the peripheral nerves of the wrist.

It is watch-shaped with high operability and can be easily attached and detached, allowing patients to treat themselves at home. Additionally, it is covered by medical insurance, which reduces the financial burden for patients who are enrolled.

The Cala kIQ System uses TAPS (Transcutaneous Afferent Patterned Stimulation) therapy and is clinically proven effective based on a doctor’s prescription. According to the company, 9 out of 10 people experience a reduction in tremors during a full 40-minute session, with the effect lasting more than one hour after the therapy for the majority. Currently, it targets the US market, and is only applicable to VA (Veterans Insurance) and Medicare (elderly/disabled insurance) enrollees.

The Cala kIQ System also provides “on-demand treatment,” “secure data,” and an “online patient portal” for patients. With on-demand treatment, patients can receive treatment when needed, and through the patient portal site, they can securely check treatment data and share result reports with their doctors.
