Littlehampton: Police issue statement on discovery of ‘bomb’

The western end of Littlehampton promenade was closed this afternoon, May 1, after a “suspected bomb” was found under the coastguard tower. 

Sussex Police and HM Coastguard attended the scene and a cordon was set up.

Arun District Council advised members of the public to avoid the area. 

A spokeswoman for the force said: “Police responded to a report at 3.30pm, May 1, of a suspected explosive shell or flare being found on the beach, near the coastguard tower, on Littlehampton beach.

At 4.30pm today, Arun District Council said: “The promenade at Littlehampton beach has been closed temporarily at the Western end by the coastguard tower, due to a suspected bomb under the tower.

“The beach has been cleared, and the public toilets are closed.

“Emergency services are on the way. Please stay away from the area.”

The Argus has requested further information. 

HM Coastguard has been approached for comment.
