Lorde has announced her first new single in almost four years.
The news comes just days after her Coachella cameo on-stage, appearing alongside Charli xcx during her set, and five days after her return to Instagram.
The New Zealand-born singer has revealed the title of the new song but is yet to reveal to fan exactly when they can expect to hear it.

“My new song What Was That. Out soon,” she captioned a photo by Talia Chetrit on Instagram.
The image, showing the singer close up with water dripping off her face, looks like it could be a single or album cover.
Fans were expecting some sort of announcement from the singer, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O’Connor, after the 28-year-old wiped her Instagram account eight months ago.
Lorde featured last year on the remix to Charli xcx’s song Girl, So Confusing, which led to some guest appearances on the British singer’s world tour before culminating in the Coachella duet.
The collaboration came after reports the singers had a falling out back in 2014.
Fans spotted lyrics in their individual songs and worked out they were about each other.
After Charli xcx released her latest album, Brat, last year things came to a head when, through interviews, the pair realised they’d both misinterpreted each other.
This led them to reconnect and ultimately the pair collaborated on a remix of the track.
Lorde also recorded a remake of the 1974 Al Green hit Take Me to the River for the Talking Heads tribute album Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Tribute to Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense.
While Secrets from a Girl (Who’s Seen It All) was given radio release in 2022, What Was That will be her first single since November 2021’s Fallen Fruit, from her album Solar Power.

All the stars spotted at Coachella 2025
Solar Power was Lorde’s third studio album and hit number 1 on the ARIA charts following its August 2021 release.
Fans are now eagerly awaiting to see if a new album announcement follows.
