Korea’s foreign ministry said Tuesday that Seoul and Washington are holding working-level discussions on “high-level communications” amid expectations the reinstatement of acting President Han Duck-soo may lead to his first phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Lee Jae-woong, disclosed the move during a press briefing a day after the Constitutional Court rejected Han’s impeachment, nearly three months after he was impeached in connection with President Yoon Suk Yeol’s short-lived martial law imposition on Dec. 3.
Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok, who had been serving as acting president until Monday, had not held any phone calls with Trump since his return to the presidency in January, apparently due to the leadership vacuum.
When asked about the possibility of a phone call between Han and Trump, Lee said, “Both Korea and the U.S. share the importance of high-level communications.”
“For this, consultations are under way between (the two countries’) working-level personnel,” he said. (Yonhap)
