Police are investigating after an LGBTQ+-themed bench in Hitchin, Hertfordshire was set ablaze.
North Herts Pride wrote on Facebook on Tuesday (15 April): “[We are] devastated and deeply saddened to learn that the North Herts Pride bench on Windmill Hill was set on fire last night.”
The rainbow-coloured bench was installed in Hitchin in March 2023, after the local council allocated funds to the group. Local artist Jacob Williams-Leroy was commissioned to paint it.
‘An attack on acceptance and progress’
“This bench was more than just a seat, it was a vibrant symbol of love, inclusivity and unity,” the Facebook post continued.
“Painted in the colours of the Pride flag, it stood as a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community in our area, a reminder that everyone belongs and has a right to feel safe, seen and valued.”
The vandalism was described as an attack on “visibility, acceptance and progress”.
The group launched a JustGiving fundraiser with a target of £650 to restore the bench, but almost £1,500 has already been raised.
A ‘thorough investigation will take place’
North Herts police said the arson attack took place between 5pm on Monday (14 April) and 9am the following day.
“We are continuing to establish the full circumstances of this incident and are appealing for any information,” said hate crime officer PC Lewis Thomson.
“We know this crime may have affected members of the LGBTQ+ community and I want to assure people that a full and thorough investigation will take place.”
