In response to public outcry and media reports highlighting stagnant tandoor prices despite falling wheat and flour rates the Hyderabad district administration has issued new directives to reduce the prices of naan, chapati, and other tandoor items.
The price cut, confirmed by Deputy Commissioner Zain-ul-Abideen Memon, comes as a relief to local consumers. As per the official notice, the cost of a 100g chapati has been slashed from Rs15 to Rs10, while the price for a 120g tandoori naan has dropped from Rs20 to Rs15. Additionally, a 180g tandoori naan, which was previously priced at Rs30, will now cost just Rs24.
In an effort to ensure transparency, all tandoor operators in Hyderabad have been instructed to prominently display the new price list at their establishments. The district administration has also warned of stringent legal action against non-compliance. Assistant commissioners, along with officers from the Bureau of Supply and Prices, have been tasked with conducting surprise inspections to enforce the price revision.
The All Hyderabad Sheermal and Tandoor Association, led by Chairman Fahd Mian Dehlvi, has voluntarily reduced the prices of milky-roti (240g) and kulcha (200g) by Rs5 each, now priced at Rs40 and Rs45, respectively. However, premium items such as Taftan and Sheermal, which are made with ghee and milk, will remain at Rs90 due to the high cost of production.
The decision to revise prices follows a significant reduction in the cost of flour, with the price of a 50kg flour bag dropping from Rs5,800 to Rs4,400. Dehlvi explained that previous price hikes had been prompted by rising costs of flour, fine flour, ghee, and milk. With the recent drop in flour prices, revising the rates became both necessary and feasible.
The newly adjusted prices have already been implemented at the association’s 80 registered tandoors across the city. However, Dehlvi has urged the district authorities to ensure that these revised prices are also enforced at unregistered roadside eateries and independent restaurants that are not part of the association.
This move is expected to provide much-needed relief to consumers while promoting fairness in the local food industry amid fluctuating raw material costs.
