Profile: Meet Aarthi Subramanian, the new COO of TCS

When Aarthi Subramanian steps into the role of President and Chief Operating Officer at Tata Consultancy Services on May 1 for the next five years, she will not only be exchanging her non-executive position on the board to an executive position, but will be the first woman to take over as the COO in the software company.

“She knows TCS quite well, she has been part of the TCS board,” said CEO & MD, K Krithivasan, while announcing her appointment during the fourth quarter results. She will be succeeding N Ganapathy Subramaniam, who stepped down last year.

For the Group Chief Digital Officer at Tata Sons, it is back to the company that she started out with 36 years ago as a graduate trainee. According to her bio, she commenced her career with the software company and worked in various roles in India, the US, Canada, and Sweden. She was executive director and Global Head of Delivery Excellence, Governance and Compliance. Except for a brief period, she was with the company till 2016.

As the Chief Digital Officer, she was in charge of driving adoption of digital technology, innovation, and artificial intelligence over the last eight years. “She has been driving multiple initiatives across the group,” a TCS release said. She ensured that the companies within the conglomerate were able to harness digital technologies to improve operational efficiencies and gain competitive advantage.

Subramanian, who has a Masters in Engineering Management from the University of Kansas, has extensive experience in technology and operations.

She is also on the board of several companies within the group such as Tata Capital, Tata AIA Life Insurance, and Infiniti Retail. She has contributed to them by enhancing their digital capabilities.

In appointing Subramanian to the position of COO to drive technology transformation, TCS has chosen the person with the widest experience in that area.
