No matter how many times you’ve seen it, Swan Lake never loses its magic. When the ballet came to Bass Concert Hall, the entire theater felt like it had been swept into a dream. A fever dream filled with velvety grace and that old-school ballet magic we all secretly crave.
The State Ballet Theatre of Ukraine took the stage with elegance, precision and emotion – captivating us from the very first note of Tchaikovsky’s score to the final bow.

The Costumes
Let’s start with the obvious: the stunning costumes. Every detail feels like it belongs in a European palace. The white tutus shimmer under the lights. The black swan’s gown is pure drama. Every royal and courtly look is timeless, detailed and just so right. You can tell this isn’t a modern reinterpretation. It’s classic, beautiful ballet in its purest form.

The Performance
As mentioned, there’s something about Swan Lake that never gets old. From the story to the music to that haunting grace. When it’s danced with the kind of technical precision and emotional weight this company brought, it hits deeper.
The famous swan arms are hypnotic. The pas de deux is fluid and weightless. And those group scenes with rows of dancers moving in perfect unison? Genuinely breathtaking.
It looks effortless but we all know it absolutely is not.
The Sweetest Local Touch
Among the international grace and grandeur, there was something unexpectedly special: local ballet students from Austin joined the stage throughout the evening.
Our own little stars appeared in several scenes, seamlessly woven into the production alongside the Ukrainian company. Let’s just say, they were adorable, poised and clearly gave it their all. It was the kind of moment that makes you smile so wide you forget you’re trying to be fancy. And it added a very real, very Austin kind of charm to the evening.
Swan Lake will always be a classic. But when it’s danced like this – with grace, heart and a few surprises – it reminds you why it truly is a masterpiece.
