Jerusalem (dpa) – German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has reiterated his calls for a peaceful solution to the Gaza war in talks with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He emphasised the need “to highlight political perspectives for ending the war, especially in dialogue with the Arab states”, a spokeswoman announced after the talks in Jerusalem. Furthermore, Steinmeier stressed the urgent need “to guarantee the population in Gaza access to humanitarian aid again”.
Ahead of the meeting, Steinmeier rejected the call by Amnesty International not to meet with Netanyahu. He said that it would be “the easiest thing for politicians to avoid difficult conversations. This has never been my attitude. And it most certainly isn’t in the relationship with Israel.
Today (Wednesday) will see Steinmeier visit Beeri kibbutz, which is situated directly on the border with the Gaza Strip. It was almost completely destroyed by Hamas during its attack on Israel on 7 October 2023.
