Sun Liao is the founder of Abbreviate.com, a powerhouse for quantitative market research.
He’s a crypto, equity, and options trader with over a decade of experience across global markets.
“I’m grateful for being able to blur the line between work and play.”
Deeply passionate about quant finance, he’s constantly striving to build proprietary trading strategies.
He durably outperforms broad market indices and actively manages a research database that grows by several terabytes a day.
“Every trade is a phenomenal opportunity to improve our algorithms, regardless of the outcome. I think it’s crucial to look at data objectively and maintain a disciplined neutral stance.”
Initially focused on equity derivatives, he’s been able to apply his suite of in-house methods to succeed in numerous other markets over time.
He also brings this mindset to the track, where he enjoys modifying his cars for faster lap times.
Whether it’s adjusting aerodynamics, choosing tires, or reducing weight—there’s always something that can be improved.
“It’s not just about buying a Porsche GT3 RS and calling it a day. Just like trading, there are essentially unlimited other factors to consider. Oftentimes in F1, first place is faster than second by only fractions of a second. But it probably took thousands of hours optimizing countless variables, to be able to get to that point.”
Sun’s favorite quote from Damian Lillard speaks volumes about what it takes to win.
“To look good in front of thousands, one must outwork thousands in front of nobody.”
His intense passion for trading began in his dorm room during university, while obtaining his Bachelor of Science.
Sun routinely skipped classes to avoid missing the main forex sessions in London, New York, and Tokyo.
“Similar to the triage in a medical setting, I strongly believe in the importance of prioritizing what’s really going to move the needle.”
Sun continues to apply this to his everyday life.
Instead of having dozens of daily tasks, he prefers to focus on two crucial things.
One that covers health and another for wealth.
He ensures that these two tasks are completed every day, before anything else—whether that means going for a run or overseeing current positions.
Once these are done, he considers it a successful day.
Only then does he approach the remaining tasks—carefully and without urgency.
“If you win enough days, you win the week. Win enough weeks and you win the year. Win enough years and you win in life. Being an elite trader is all about doing the same important tasks consistently. Technical, fundamental, and sentiment analysis can be overwhelming, but it must be done.”
Recently, Sun began transparently sharing his journey online.
His primary goal is to inspire, while providing massive value to the trading community worldwide.
This has always been a part of his long term vision.
As a committed lifelong learner, he also enjoys meaningful connections with all-stars from different parallels.
