Supreme Court condemns Pahalgam terror attack: Diabolical act of mindless violence

The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a strong condemnation of the deadly terror attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, describing it as a ‘cowardly’ and “diabolical act of mindless violence” that has shaken the nation’s conscience.

In a rare full-court resolution, all judges of the top court unanimously expressed their deep anguish over the incident and extended their solidarity to the victims and their families.

“This diabolical act of mindless violence has shaken the conscience of all and is a stark reminder of the brutality and inhumanity that terrorism unleashes,” a Supreme Court resolution said.

“The Supreme Court of India pays its respectful tribute to the innocent lives snuffed out brutally and prematurely while also expressing its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. May the departed souls rest in peace and may those who were injured recover soon. The nation stands with the victims and their families in this hour of indescribable grief,” it added.

The resolution also noted the victims of the terror attack were tourists who had come to enjoy the natural beauty of Kashmir, often hailed as the “Crown Jewel of India”.

As a mark of respect and solidarity, all judges, lawyers, court staff, and members of the Registry observed a two-minute silence at around 2 pm when the courts assembled in the post-lunch session.

Even the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) unequivocally condemned the barbaric and cowardly terrorist attacks perpetrated against innocent tourists in the peaceful region of Pahalgam.

“We mourn the tragic loss of lives and express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. Our thoughts and prayers are with those injured, and we wish them speedy recovery. These reprehensible acts of violence are a direct assault on the values of humanity. Targeting unarmed, innocent civilians is an act of unpardonable savagery,” a SCBA resolution said.

Terrorists opened fire at a crowded tourist spot in South Kashmir’s Pahalgam at around 3 pm on Tuesday, leaving at least 26 dead — most of them tourists — and injuring several more.
