Nintendo’s rumored Switch 2 rollout is a calculated power move to dominate hype, supply, and the competition.

The revelation comes from an official Nintendo page detailing the newly announced Video Game Card feature, which allows digital game sharing across systems. The legal disclaimer in question states:

“Compatible systems must be linked to a Nintendo Account to use virtual game cards. Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games can only be loaded on a Nintendo Switch 2 system. To move virtual game cards between two systems, you must pair the systems via local wireless and an internet connection, but only when pairing the systems for the first time. Up to two systems total can be linked per Nintendo Account.”

The immediate takeaways include the fact that the Nintendo Switch 2 will support a mix of exclusive games and enhanced versions of existing Switch titles. Is it free upgrades, paid remasters, or a lockout for gamers who don’t upgrade immediately?

Sony introduced PS5 Enhanced titles, offering free or paid upgrades, while Xbox pushed Smart Delivery, ensuring that one purchase got you the best version of the game on any supported hardware.

Nintendo, however, has a history of charging for re-releases, such as the full price for Wii U-to-Switch ports, and it likely won’t hesitate to dust off that old playbook.

The “Switch 2 Edition” games are a big hint that we’re looking at paid remasters rather than free performance upgrades. If there were an easy way to upgrade from Switch 1 to Switch 2, Nintendo likely would’ve said so by now. The fact that they haven’t is a red flag for anyone hoping for free next-gen patches.

Nintendo Switch’s Best-Selling Game Almost Never Happened

Former Nintendo insiders have revealed that the Switch’s best-selling game almost never came to be, as it was a total afterthought by the company.

The good news is that Switch 2 will be backward and compatible with the original Switch games. However, this leak suggests that some new features, performance boosts, and potential content expansions might be locked behind Switch 2-specific versions.

For games with demanding performance needs, like Tears of the Kingdom at 60 FPS or Metroid Prime 4, we might see a scenario where Switch 1 versions run at lower fidelity while the Switch 2 Edition unlocks full power.

There has been no official announcement on how Switch 2 Edition games will work, but we expect answers at the upcoming Nintendo Direct on April 2.
