The Gothelie Station to open its doors in Goodramgate

The Gothelie Station is currently preparing to open the doors on a gothic Victorian experience in 25 Goodramgate that will take visitors back in time to the days where York had the biggest railway station in the country.

Owner Viki Papadopoulou moved to York around seven years ago with her husband and made the decision to open her first shop after working in different retail roles across the city.

She said: “After all of this experience working in retail, I decided to open my own shop.

“I first started thinking about opening the shop about two years ago and it was hard to find a place for this concept that would fit. Every day, I feel more confident about the location and the decision to open up here in Goodramgate.

“I’m quite creative and I really like to do my own thing; I love storytelling and creating concepts, so I wanted to do this. This shop will be like stepping back into the Victorian era – it’s not just a shop; it’s an experience.”

The Gothelie Station tells the story of Gothelie – a currently mysterious character – through the lens of York’s Victorian history with clues and easter eggs dotted all other the shop’s interior and others currently posted to the shop’s social media pages.

As well as being an experience, the shop will sell a variety of gothic and Victorian themed souvenirs, all of which are fully customised and chosen carefully to add to the atmosphere of the shop itself.

This will include accessories, candles, decorative items, music boxes, and stationary – something that she hopes that tourists will be able to enjoy and take back to their own countries with a better feel for the vibe of the city.

Viki said: “I wouldn’t want to open this shop anywhere else; York is just the right location for this.”

The Gothelie Station is preparing to open its doors in late April/early May and will be sharing teasers to its Facebook and Instagram page.
