On 4 April 2025, the US Space Force (USSF) published an article on its official STARCOM website announcing changes to the agency’s Capstone Doctrine document. In the official release, the agency revealed that the new Space Force Doctrine Document 1 (SFDD-1) will hold the defining foundational tenets for the agency.

The US Space Force is undergoing serious reformation in its practices to better carry out its job in space. A few weeks ago, the agency announced its plans to integrate AI into its operations, and now it is revealing its new capstone doctrine.
These changes are part of the agency’s plans to achieve Space Superiority on a global scale. Following the release of the new capstone doctrine, the Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman leaves Guardians with a strong message.
This message urges them to read and understand everything about the new SFDD-1. In his words, “If you take away one request from my remarks, then let it be that you read SFDD-1 as soon as it’s available … think about what it means to you and your daily activities … and discuss it with your fellow Guardians.”
He adds that the release of this new doctrine document “is the first step in a much longer journey.” The details of the document highlight the importance of the USSF sharpening its “readiness and to prepare for the challenges before us,” as Saltzman points out.
What Is Contained In The Updated Capstone Doctrine Document?
Contained within this document are the reasons why the Space Force fights, what they do, and how they integrate into the joint force. The document also explains the importance of national and military space power, as well as the foundation and roles of the USSF.
It goes on to explain the “values, officer, enlisted, and civilian roles, how the USSF functionally organizes, and key relationships.” Additional information within this document is a detailed description of the employment of space power, the core functions of space control, global mission operations, and space access.
Enshrined within the document are also the various successes and failures of the agency. A better understanding of the updates to this document will help steer Guardians on the right path regarding the agency’s refined goals.
