On 27 April 2025, the leaders of the US House and Senate Armed Services Committees proposed a defence budget bump. This new proposal aims to grow the US defence spending by up to $150 billion to strengthen it against rivals.
Armed Services Committees Call For More Defence Funding
Already, the US Senate has approved a defence budget of over $886 billion this year. Now, this new proposal aims to drive this already large budget to $1 trillion for fiscal year 2025.
The proposal was presented before legislation by House Armed Services Committee by Chairman Rep. Mike Rogers (R., Ala.) and Chairman Sen. Roger Wicker. This proposal calls for funding of over $150 billion, with $25 billion set to move towards the development of the US Golden Dome defence system.
To support this funding proposal, Mike Rogers says that the US “defence industrial base has weakened.” He adds that “America’s deterrence is failing and without a generational investment in our national defence, we will lose the ability to defeat our adversaries.”
The debate and markup of this bill will take place on 29 April 2025 to see if it will pass the Senate for approval. While talking about this new proposal, Roger Wicker refers to it as a “generational upgrade for our nation’s defence capabilities.”
A portion of this funding will go into the development of missile defence, shipbuilding, munitions production and programs to improve military readiness and quality of life. For now, all these projects can’t start without the approval of the legislature to pass the bill, which kicks off the approval process.
The US Golden Dome To Benefit From The Armed Services Committee’s New Proposal
Following the swearing-in of the Donald Trump administration, the US government began making plans for its Golden Dome defence system. Now, the Armed Services Committee’s proposal to increase the US Defence funding hopes to pull more money towards the development of this defence system.
From the available information on this proposal, we learn that $25 billion will be dedicated towards the Golden Dome’s development. About $15 billion will be put towards the development of satellites, sensors, launch infrastructure and interceptors that will be part of the Golden Dome’s system.
A part of this money will be used to expand the multi-service advanced capability hypersonic test bed, develop military non-kinetic missile defence effects, and so on. While this proposal is pitched to be of benefit to the US defence, some have a different take on it.
