Water Board To Activate Emergency Pumping

Hyderabad:With the water level at Nagarjunasagar reservoir dropping steadily, the HMWS&SB is preparing to activate emergency pumping arrangements to avoid disruption to the city’s water supply.

Water at the Nagarjunasagar stood at 514 feet on Saturday, against the minimum draw down level (MDDL) of 510 feet, the point beyond which normal pumping is not possible. The water board has sanctioned tenders worth `4.5 crore to set up emergency pumping infrastructure.

Under this plan, the contractor will install five 700 horsepower (HP) motors, five 600 HP motors and five 175 HP motors which together can draw around 900 cusecs of water from the dead storage, if required. This set-up is expected to be ready by the end of this month.

The water noted that there is no immediate concern as of now, but the move was a precautionary step. “Currently, the situation is good. We are making all arrangements in advance so that, if needed, emergency pumping can be started immediately. If the situation does not demand it, the system will be kept on stand-by and used whenever necessary,” board official Sudarshan Reddy told Deccan Chronicle.

The board is drawing around 270 million gallons per day (MGD) from Nagarjunasagar through the Krishna Phase I, II and III schemes. This amounts to about 1.4 tmc ft of water being utilised every month for Hyderabad’s needs.
