What do you think of the drinking culture in Germany?

From famous folk festivals like Oktoberfest to its summer beer garden culture, drinking plays a huge role in life in Germany. We’d love to know what surprised you about the country’s boozy customs after moving here, and if you think it should change.

Along with images of alpine scenery, sausages and high-tech cars, beer is top of mind for many people when they think of Germany.

Germany’s love affair with the malty drink dates back centuries, and even today it’s home to nearly 1,500 breweries and some of the world’s biggest beer festivals. 

Upon first moving to Germany, many people are surprised by the relaxed rules around drinking. Advertising is completely unrestricted, booze is immensely affordable, and in many big cities the access to alcohol is almost unrestricted – no matter what time of day.
