The upcoming The Amityville Horror film, produced by Amazon MGM Studios, has announced its director.
Based on Jay Anson’s 1977 book, the franchise first launched in 1979 with Stuart Rosenberg’s film featuring James Brolin, Margot Kidder, and Rod Steiger. Since then, it has seen numerous sequels, remakes, and reboots, including the 2005 version starring Ryan Reynolds and the 2017 film Amityville: The Awakening with Bella Thorne and Mckenna Grace. According to The Hollywood Reporter, David F. Sandberg has been tapped to direct the new installment. Sandberg made his feature debut with Lights Out in 2016 and has since directed Annabelle: Creation (2017), Shazam! (2019), Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023), and the upcoming Until Dawn (2025).
Sandberg will also serve as producer alongside Peter Safran and John Rickard. The project’s executive producers are Natalia Safran and Lotta Losten. The screenplay is written by Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing, who recently collaborated on Warner Bros.’ The Conjuring: Last Rites, now playing in U.S. theaters.
Plot details remain under wraps, and no casting information has been revealed yet.
The 1979 film was described as a chilling story about a family haunted by supernatural forces after moving into a house in New York State, which was the site of a recent mass killing and once belonged to an 18th-century Satanist. Strange phenomena, including swarms of flies and walls oozing slime and blood, prompted the family to seek help from a local priest to banish the evil spirits.
A release date for the new The Amityville Horror movie has not yet been announced by Amazon MGM Studios.
