Wombo Games reveals itself and its debut title, Raiders of Blackveil

New studio Wombo Games today drew back the curtain on both its own existence, as well as its first game. The studio, which is led by IO Interactive co-founder Janos Flösser, is making a strategy roguelite called Raiders of Blackveil, which it plans to launch in early access this summer. Wombo Games is staffed by developers who’ve worked on such titles as Tomb Raider and Deus Ex. Raiders of Blackveil is currently available to wishlist on Steam.

According to Wombo, Raiders of Blackveil takes elements from MOBAs, RPGs and PvE extraction titles. Working either solo or in co-op groups of up to three, players take on the role of anthropomorphic animals, living in “a dystopian industrial fantasy world where animals are oppressed by a human mega corporation called Blackveil,” according to the game’s Steam page. Players can choose from a variety of champions who, in MOBA fashion, come in eight different classes with a variety of abilities, while collecting loot and going on raids against the villainous Blackveil.

Chris Nelson, the game’s director, told GamesBeat in an interview, “We were working together for six years, playing games after hours a lot. We were looking for this very particular experience, and we just couldn’t find it. We were playing MOBAs, action RPGs and roguelites a lot, and we thought, ‘Let’s try to look at these genres and write down, what it is we love. Why are we playing them, and why is it that they don’t scratch that itch?’ So that pretty much came down to the vision, or the ambition, to merge these three genres: MOBA, RPG and roguelite, but do it within an original IP. That was very important as well. We wanted to establish a world and create something that was memorable and could last, you know, for a long time.”

Speaking with GamesBeat, Flösser said, “We wanted to keep [the studio] small and nimble and see how far we could push it. We managed to get funding and started in July 2023, so we’re almost two years-old… Very early on, we had a playable version, almost within the first month-and-a-half, and [investors] started to play it. They fell in love with the concept, and they’ve been playing it ever since. And I think this is first time I have this experience that investors go crazy with the team and crazy with the concept. So we managed to raise funds three times during the last two years… For now, it’s pretty much focused on doing the right game for the right audience.”
