Wuthering Heights‘ casting director has spoken out after fans criticised the choice of Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi for the leading roles in the upcoming film.
The Aussie pair, 34 and 27 respectively, will portray iconic characters and love interests Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff in the film adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic gothic novel.
During a Q&A session at Scotland’s Sands Film Festival, as reported by Deadline, Kharmel Cochrane told fans the film doesn’t “need to be accurate”, adding, “There’s definitely going to be some English Lit fans that are not going to be happy.”

Cochrane added of the casting during the Q&A, “There was one Instagram comment that said, ‘The casting director should be shot’.”
But she urged fans to “wait till you see it” before making a judgement or comments.
“You really don’t need to be accurate. It’s just a book. That is not based on real life. It’s all art.”

A recent photo surfaced from the film’s set showing Robbie in a white wedding dress, and Elordi was also seen in period dress.
Some fans of the book have questioned casting Robbie as 18-year-old Catherine and Elordi as Heathcliff, due to questions of Heathcliff’s ethnicity.
The character is reportedly described as a “dark-skinned gipsy” in the book.
The film is set to be released next year and is directed by Emerald Fennell.
