
As I began writing this column while listening in real time to Moon Hyung-bae, the acting chief justice of the Constitutional Court of Korea, reading aloud the court’s decision in Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment case. That was only three weeks ago, but it seems a lot longer, albeit not as long as the nail-bitingly anxious 38 days it took the court to hand down a decision from the final hearing date in the impeachment case. That the decision should be a unanimous one was not a surprise. That Yoon should be removed from office was an absolute given for anyone who has seen what he had done on that night and thereafter. He, who had sworn to protect the Constitution and as the president should be primus inter pares in upholding the constitutional values, was out there actively inciting violence and undermining the constitutional order. He was acting as if he was above the law. “L’etat, c’est moi.” What was surprising and unexpected was how long it took for the court to deliver its decision.
