A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received multiple 999 calls shortly after 5.16pm on Saturday to reports of a fire in the open off Denne Road in Horsham.
“Joint Fire Control mobilised three fire engines, a water carrier and two off-road vehicles to the scene.
Crews on the scene yesterday evening (Image: EDDIE MITCHELL) “Firefighters worked extremely hard alongside the service’s wildfire tactical advisor in a challenging environment, which was difficult underfoot due to the landscape and undergrowth.
“The fire was contained to around four hectares and crews managed to prevent it reaching two nearby properties.
“Crews worked alongside the service’s wildfire tactical advisor to bring the fire under control.
“Firefighters worked into the evening to extinguish the fire using jets and beaters, with relief crews brought in throughout the night who worked to dampen down the area and extinguish remaining signs of fire. The crews worked to extinguish around ten deep-seated hotspots which were found using a thermal imaging camera in the peat under the surface.
“We remain on scene this morning ensuring that there are no further signs of fire and would continue to urge people to avoid the area while the incident is ongoing.
“We would also urge residents to take extra care if they are out and about over the bank holiday. After a particularly dry period this spring, wildfires can begin very easily.
“We would like to remind all residents not to drop cigarettes or burning materials on dry ground; to keep children away from lighters and matches; to only use designated barbecue areas; and to dispose of glass bottles and litter properly to minimise the risk of a fire taking hold.
“If you see signs of a fire dial 999 immediately.”
